SculptureSculpture for me is a way to explore the use of a diversity of materials and fabricate them into a new form. Some of my sculptures contain found objects reclaimed from their discarded use as a material in its past life. Other materials exist within their raw state that become a surface, texture, or shape to work with in some form or another. Working with various materials allows for a freedom to shift from stone, metal, wood, glass, plastic, etc that respond to each other as well as the environment in which they exist.
What inspires my interest in creating sculpture is design and create not only a work of art, but an object that relates to the place it exists within in some form or another. I believe sculpture can exist in a functional aspect where it is not only observed and contemplated upon, but in some cases becomes a surface to write upon, climb upon. or sit upon. I see sculpture as a form that can also function as way finding elements set within a site specific urban or natural environment. The potential for sculpture to create ecological environments that benefit not only humans due to the nature of their visual appearance, but also may act as refuge for humans, habitat for birds, a living wall of plants for pollinators. Sculpture for me does not exist in its traditional form, instead it explores the potential of crossing into the realm of science and education or play and activation. Other sculpture I design and create cross the boundaries of art and landscape architecture. These sculptures can be found under the categories of environmental art, public art, and land art chitecture. |
