Hot SpringsLOCATION : Truth or Consequences
MATERIAL : PROPOSAL Truth or Consequences is a town in New Mexico that was originally known as Hot Springs because of the abundant springs in the area along the Rio Grande River. As part of the landscape architecture program at UNM we had an opportunity to hold some charettes with the community of T or C. The design solutions and interventions that I was inspired to create were meant to bring the awareness of the hot springs resorts in the town that are an important economic resource. The purpose of my site specific designs were to highlight the unique geological and hydrological elements within the landscape as well as the cultural history of the area. One of my interests was to make visible the used hot springs water that is normally sent into pipes that direct it into the river. Instead, I wanted to reuse the water for various site specific sculptures. The designs also focused on transportation for the community as well as for the tourists to get around town. Creating shade for the bus stops was important as well as designs that reflect the natural and cultural landscape of Truth or Consequences. Plants that are salt and drought tolerant are important to the designs because of the extreme conditions created by high elevation, lots of sun, little moisture, and the high salinity of the soil. |
